PlaceME and PlaceME Online2007
A system for administrating placement students, employers and tutors. Written in Java and JSP using an Oracle database backend.
Overview
PlaceME and PlaceME Online where the products of the PRCI201 module in Stage 2, This was a group project to create a system to administer placement students, employers and the placements they offer.
My role in this project was primarily Software Engineering team leader, although I was also voted Project Administrator, and due to unforseen circumstances had to take over some of the Systems analysis also.
A lot of unique ideas where put into this project, most of which came from our project manager at the design stage I studied the feasibility of each idea from Java implementation point of view and either ensured the idea became reality or simply stated it wouldn't be done.
Unique features
Some of the unique features our product had include:
Reusable tabs Inspired by various internet browsers, this allows multiple students, employer or tutor details to be viewed at once.
Database stored documents Attachments to a post such as application forms and students CVs are stored directly in the database.
Report generation The system is able to output reports on students who don’t have CVs for example straight to PDF format
Placements map Using the Google Maps API the placements are plotted directly onto a map and therefore a placements location can be seen easily and searching for placements by location is easy.

Summary
- This project took a lot of work, mainly because we scoped it far too large for 10 credits
- We were hugely satisfied with the final product
- I learned a lot more about Java, learned JSP from scratch, and learned how to use the Google Maps API
